The NORTH DEVON MOTOR CLUB was formed in 1946 with the purpose of organising and promoting all forms of motorsport throughout the North Devon area. Since then, the club has developed through changing times to become one of the leading motorsports clubs in the South West. The NDMC is proud to be a founding member of the Devon 4 Motorsport. Working in partnership with our hosts Dunkeswell Kart Racing Club, Plymouth and Torbay Motor Clubs, this venture has proved in many ways to have made a valuable contribution to south-west motorsport.

The club currently boasts around 200 members, ranging from those who have been a member since the early days nearly 60 years ago to the under 17 year-old Junior members who are nicknamed the Griffins. It is also one of the few motor clubs to hold events on its own land, as it owns a 52-acre field at Sugworthy, near High Bickington.

Organised events range from Treasure Hunts, Navigation Exercises and Gymkhanas which can be entered using a normal family car, to Trials, Sprints, Autocross and Rallies where more specially prepared vehicles are usually required. Club members also compete and marshal in events all over the country.

Club nights are held on the first Wednesday of every month, where club members gather to share anecdotes and experiences of all things motoring and to enjoy activities ranging from Quizzes and Treasure Hunts to Guest Speakers and Skittles evenings! More recently, members have been invited along to places or business premises for ‘guided tours’. Each full member also receives a copy of 'Checkpoint', the club's monthly magazine containing event reports, features and a calendar of events.

Club Achievements…

In recent years, the North Devon Motor Club has won a number of awards marking its achievements and development. In 1999, the club was voted the leading motorsports club in the south west, and finished 3rd overall in the MSA Motor Club of the Year competition. This was then surpassed in 2000, when the NDMC was voted 1st overall in the country, beating over 600 other clubs to the award.

As winners of that competition, the club was entered into the Sports Club of the Year Awards, run by the Council of Physical Recreation (CCPR). The club was commended by the CCPR for its "particularly high standard" and for "the excellent service offered to the community". It also became the first motor club to receive such a commendation.

Despite the problems caused by Foot and Mouth disease in 2001, the club was once again highly commended by the MSA as it finished 4th in the Club of the Year competition.

Onward and Upward…

What of the future ? Well, NDMC continues to be at the forefront of motorsport. After many years of knocking at the door, we have finally achieved our long-held dream to once again run motorsport at RMB Chivenor, near Barnstaple. The three recent sprints, two in 2003, one in 2004, were all over-subscribed within days of entries being available. With another event planned for this June, 2005 looks like it’s going to be yet another successful year… watch this space … or log on to www.ndmc.org.uk.
