Plymouth Motor Club promotes many forms of four wheeled motor sport, but this was not true in the early days of the Club, which was formed in 1908 and known then as Plymouth and District Motorcycle Club. As the name suggests, the membership at that time was made up almost exclusively of motorcyclists, and it was only after the First World War that car enthusiasts started to infiltrate the ranks of the two-wheeled fraternity. Early events consisted mainly of “road trial” type events for both car and motorcycle. 1952 saw Plymouth Motor Club and Cornwall Vintage Car Club forming a partnership – Cornwall Motor Racing Ltd. – to promote racing on a circuit at Davidstow airfield in North Cornwall. During this circuits short career, it hosted Cornwall’s sole Formula 1 race meetings until 1955. One of the many reasons for the demise of the circuit was the bad weather which still hampers the stage rally events which take place there today. In the modern Club, it would be fair to say that rallying & speed hillclimbs are the main diet of the Club, but last year we ran a couple of sprints at the new Dunkeswell circuit. We had last run sprints about twenty years ago at a venue called Chelson Meadow in Plymouth. Chelson Meadow is now the local rubbish tip!! In a large proportion of the events that we currently organise a driver can compete in a standard family car with no special equipment and on a limited budget. By joining Plymouth Motor Club you can be assured of a warm welcome & assistance with whatever form of motorsport you are or want to be involved in. |
